HAD THE rifle of a police constable not got jammed on Sunday afternoon, some of the criminals who managed to escape during the encounter with the police at Ghatampur on Monday might have been killed or arrested on Sunday itself.

This startling fact surfaced when a source in the police department said on Sunday afternoon Raju Kahar, Gore Yadav, Santan Yadav, Raju Chauhan and Ram Karan had raided the house of Ram Pal in Rajepur village.

The same day, the police cordoned off the village on a tip-off and there was an exchange of fire between the police and the miscreants for 15 minutes but the rifle of Sarvesh, a constable in the police department, who was battling with the criminals, got jammed.

The miscreants took advantage of it and managed to escape as Sarvesh, who was in the key position, was not in a condition to fire.

However, they left behind a bag in which police recovered five super power gelatin rods made in Maharastra, two hand-grenades, three bombs weighing half a kg, a .12 bore countrymade pistols and several live cartridges.

Though the police returned empty handed on Sunday, luck favoured them on Monday when an informer told them that once again the five miscreants were coming to Rajepur village. Finally, the police succeeded this time and on Monday they gunned down a criminal and compelled two others to surrender.
