The University of Cambridge on Monday reaffirmed that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was a student of Trinity College and was awarded the M.Phil in Development Studies degree in 1995.

The University of Cambridge on Monday reaffirmed that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was a student of Trinity College and was awarded the M.Phil in Development Studies degree in 1995.

In a letter to Gandhi in 2009, the former vice-chancellor, Prof Alison Richard, had regretted the controversy in India over his qualifications, and had clarified that he was a student at Trinity College from October 1994 to July 1995.

He was awarded the MPhil in Development Studies degree in 1995, she had stated in the letter.

A univesity spokesman today reaffirmed to HT the contents of Prof Richard’s letter.

"It is extremely unfortunate that a controversy has arisen regarding your degree and we would like to set the controversy at rest immediately," Prof Richard wrote in her letter.

She added that Gandhi’s conduct during his time at the university was "exemplary and he remained in good standing throughout".
