The award, carrying Rs 1 lakh and a citation, would be given to her at a function later, an official release said on Monday.

Angami, 78, started her career as a nurse in the medical department of the Nagaland Government. During her posting in Kohima Cigla Hospital, an incident took place, which changed her life completely.

A woman from a poor family, admitted in the hospital for delivery, died shortly after giving birth to a baby boy.

Angami, who was already having a daughter at that time, brought the boy home and adopted him. Over the years, she became mother of orphans, destitute and children abandoned either due to poverty or born out of unwed relationships.

At present, there are 105 inmates at Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home, built by Angami. With her own initiatives, she has established a primary school up to class IV. Her centre is also giving training in the field of weaving, knitting and tailoring to girls.

The Award was instituted on August 20, 1994 on the occasion of 50th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi.
