Vasistha Bhardwaj: BJP chief Rajnath Singh on Monday blamed the Uttar Pradesh government for the recent Muzaffarnagar riots, while advising it to concentrate on development of the state instead of indulging in communal politics.
Speaking at a press conference here, he said the riots could have been averted if the government had taken timely action. Singh said UP was the only state in which a large number of communal violence incidents have happened during the one and half years rule of the Samajwadi Party. He demanded a CBI probe into the riots.
“If the government honestly wants a fair probe in the riots it should recommend a CBI probe,” he said.
Rajnath alleged that the state government had failed to maintain law and order and “for the first time a number of police personnel are alleging a foul role of a senior minister in the riots.”
During his visit to the riot affected areas, Rajnath visited Malikpura, Kakara and Sauram areas of Muzaffarngar.
“I wanted to meet Sangeet Som and Suresh Rana (BJP MLAs ) in jail, but as per orders of the state government, the district administration did not permit me to meet them,” he alleged.
Talking over the suspension of home secretary over the leakage of a government letter on the Ayodhya temple issue, Rajnath said: “It is a matter for probe that under what conditions a government order was issued and why the responsible officer has been put under the suspension.”
Rajnath also met the fathers of Gaurav and Sachin, the victims of Kaval violence on Aughust 27, besides other riot victims. Villagers of Malikpura allegedly complained to Rajnath about the role of local Samajwadi Party leaders who forced the administration to release the arrested persons just after the Kaval murder case. The BJP chief was accompanied by several party leaders during his visit.
Over the stampede at ‘Devi temple” in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh, Rajnath said that “it was a painful incident, but I thank the state government for taking immediate action, besides declaring compensation for the victims.”
