PM Manmohan Singh had constituted a committee to look into the functioning of AIIMS but Health Minister Ramadoss, it seems, was in a hurry to dismiss Dr P. Venugopal. The director’s supporters are demanding an explanation as to why the governing body superseded the PM’s instructions.

On June 18, the PM set up a three-member committee to look into the working of AIIMS. The panel headed by Dr M.S. Valiathan, founder-director of Shree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Kerala, has Health Secretary Prasanna Hota and Director-General of Health Services R.K. Srivastava as its members.

Dr Venugopal’s supporters say this committee is also heavily biased against the director. Though they do not have much hope from this committee, they argue that the director should have been given a chance to explain himself.
