Based on the inaugural novel in Rick Riordan’s ongoing series of kid-friendly adventures, Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief is a misguided attempt to update some stories from Greek mythology.
Evidently director Columbus hopes the family fantasy flick will spawn another Harry Potter-like film franchise. After all, he had also helmed the first two J K Rowling adaptations.
The focus here is on a high-school student (Lerman) who discovers that he’s actually the offspring of a Greek deity. Accompanied by a couple of other teenage demigods, the braveheart trio must retrieve a lightning bolt in order to appease the celestial beings and stave off an impending apocalypse.
Their odyssey leads them from Tennessee to Las Vegas before culminating atop New York’s Empire State Building.
The acting on the whole is inconsistent.
With luck, the future installments of the Percy Jackson saga will be more engrossing.
