Dr A.S. Narayana Rao, a scientist with the agency’s science and technology wing, was caught accepting money from a representative of a Chennai-based exporter. “He was accept-ing an initial payment of Rs 1 lakh — he’d demanded Rs 8 lakh — when the CBI arrested him in the presence of independent witnesses,” CBI spokesperson Harsh Bhal said. A local court on Tuesday remanded Rao in CBI custody till Thursday.

The export company representative had on January 29 lodged a complaint with the CBI that Rao had been demanding a bribe for clearance of an export license.

Rao told the court: “The company has implicated me as it didn’t get export licenses. I was invited by the company people and they just put money in my pocket.” The CBI prosecutor, however, pointed to transcripts of conversations between him and the complainant about the bribe payment.
