A day after police and health officials removed Hemavathy, the 35-year-old woman who was locked up in her room for five years by her parents, to a hospital, her friends and family members continued to blame her father for her condition.

A school friend, Ramya (name changed), said, "It's her father who is responsible for her condition. He picks a quarrel with everyone in the neighbourhood. Even if she recovers, she should not be brought back." Hemavathy's uncle Mritunjayappa, 76, also blamed her father.
