Age: 22

Lives: Oberwil, Switzerland

Grand slam titles: Two (Wimbledon 2003, Australian Open 2004)

Record at Wimbledon: 2003-champion, 2002-first round, 2001-quarter-finals, 2000-first round, 1999-first round

Federer finally fulfilled the promise he displayed when he ended Pete Sampras's 31-match winning streak at Wimbledon in 2001 by triumphing at the grasscourt grand slam last July.

Since then the laid-back Swiss has gone from strength to strength, winning the Australian Open in January and impressing players and fans alike with his fluid strokeplay.

Five titles this year, including one on grass at Halle, bode well for Federer, undoubtedly the most talented player of his generation. It will take a monumental effort to stop him capturing a second successive All England Club title.
