Irate relatives of the boy accused the doctors of negligence and created a scene at the hospital. Police and the area’s SDM were informed and they immediately rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the enraged relatives.

The hospital and district administration authorities pacified the relatives and the situation was restored to normal. However, the parents of the deceased refused to get a postmortem performed on the son’s body and took it away with them.

JP hospital superintendent Dr D K Verma told Hindustan Times that the deceased, Zaed Saeed, son of Ansaar of Pul Bogda, had been chosen by Dr Dicksheet for plastic surgery.

"The boy had cleft lip and cleft palate and was to be operated for corrective surgery,’’ Dr Verma said. “ However, during the course of being administered sedatives before the anaesthesia, the boy suddenly went into a cardio-respiratory arrest and died,’’ he added.

The camp was discontinued after the incident as Dr Dicksheet was himself distressed due to the boy’s sudden death and refused to conduct any more operations. In all, 111 operations were conducted in the three-day camp.
