Rupang mesmerises one and all

RUPANG SARKAR, classical singer and disciple of Padamshri Girija Devi, mesmerised the audience with her rendition of semi-classical numbers at St Mary's Convent School, Ghoorpur, here on Sunday. presented the first song in Jaunpuri raga, first in 'taal' and then in 'teen taal'. She also sang the thumri in 'Jat taal'. It was followed by her performance of chaiti which is normally presented in Birha Ras.

Sarkar presented the first song in Jaunpuri raga, first in 'taal' and then in 'teen taal'. She also sang the thumri in 'Jat taal'.

It was followed by her performance of chaiti which is normally presented in Birha Ras. The talented artiste also presented dadra dedicated to Lord Krishna. Her mesmerising performance concluded with a bhajan but on the request of the students, she presented one more bhajan in Dadra.

Winner of Surmani award 2002, Sarkar was accompanied by Shamshad Ahmad Khan on harmonium, Kuber Mishra on tabla and Santosh Mishra on sarangi. The cultural programme, a part of SPIC MACAY (Society For Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth) initiative, was organised by the school to promote Indian art and culture amongst students. More than 200 students of the school enjoyed the show and expressed their interest in enriching the art through their participation.

Earlier, SP Singh, SPIC MACAY chapter coordinator, UP and Uttaranchal, inaugurated the event. He threw light on the aims and objectives of SPIC MACAY. Madhu Shukla of Prayag Sangeet Samiti was the guest of honour on the occasion. She elaborated on the activities of the Allahabad chapter of the SPIC MACAY. Rina Singh, principal SMC, Ghoorpur, proposed the vote of thanks. She said, the school takes pride in being associated with the society.

Earlier on Saturday evening Rupang Sarkar regaled the audience at Prayag Sangeet Samiti.

She unfurled the enchanting world of music before the listeners. The talented artiste from Kolkata started with the composition 'balma more...' in rag puriya kalyan and afterwards presented numerous enriched musical compositions. Her presentations of tappa in rag kaki and thumri exposed the real talent in her. She was accompanied by Ustad Shamshad Ahmed Khan on harmonium, Santosh Kumar on sarangi, and Kuber Nath Mishra on tabla.

Earlier secretary of Prayag Sangeet Samiti JN Chaturvedi rendered an auspicious start to the event by lighting the traditional lamp. The artsites were presented with mementos. Maneesha Tiwari conducted the event.
