The Saira-Dilip-Asma 'sangam'
Like they say, “Shaadika ladoo jo khaya woh bhi pachtaya aur jo nahin khaya woh bhi pachtaya! Our actors and actresses seem to love this particular sweet (shaadi ka ladoo) very much. The legendary actor thespian Dilip Kumar, who had a massive crush on the beautiful Madhubala, ultimately married Saira Banu in the year 1966 on October 11. Their marriage was oh-so-beautiful. The 19 years age difference (Dilip was 44 and Saira 25 when they got married) did not seem to matter till societal pressure forced the thespian actor to take the plunge a second time with Hyderabadi socialite Asma Begum, a divorcee, on May 30, 1981. However, Dilip’s second marriage turned out to be a bitter alliance as the two women (Saira Banu and Asma Begum) fought tooth and nail over him. Ultimately, Dilip Kumar chose to stay on with his first wife, Saira Bano and divorced Asma Begum on January 22, 1983. Unlike Dilip Kumar, apna garam Dharam (Dharmendra) converted to Islam so that he could savour marital bliss a second time with his lady love, the dream girl Hema Malini. The rest, as they say, is history!
