INDRA DEO Tewari, elder brother of Sant Gyaneshwar, the seer from Barabanki, who was gunned down along with seven followers late last night on GT Road near Handia, has lodged an FIR against Chandra Bhadra Singh, MLA from Sultanpur, and his brother Yash Bhadra Singh for the murders. The seer was moving towards Varanasi in a motorcade when the incident took place.

Five young girls, who were critically wounded in the shoot-out in which AK-47 and other automatic weapons were used, have been admitted to the SRN hospital here. All the deceased and the injured were in the service of the seer since long. Besides the seer, two men and five girls were killed.

The seer had been camping in the annual Magh Mela area here for about a month. He suddenly decided to go to Rohania in Varanasi on Friday evening where he owned another ashram. The killers, who appeared to be well informed about the seer’s itinerary, overtook his Safari near Handia township about 30 kms from the city, and rained it with bullets from automatic weapons, claiming eight lives within minutes.

The Safari driven by Divya, one of his lady followers, swerved and fell into a ditch after a bullet hit her.

SSP Vijay Singh Meena said the killing appeared to be in retaliation of the murder of a former Sultanpur MLA Indra Bhadra Singh, who was bombed to death by a man allegedly at the behest of the seer on January 21, 1999. The murdered MLA’s sons have been accused of avenging the killing of their father, said the SSP. There were more than two dozen criminal cases against the seer in Bihar and UP, the SSP said.

The seer’s actual name was Sadanand Tewari. He hailed from Deoria. In 1981 he was accused of murdering one Anand Mohan on the zila parishad campus. NSA had been clamped on him following the murder.

After this he was accused of orchestrating murderous attack on Ishwar Deo Misra, editor of Janvarta, a Hindi daily from Varanasi. In 1983 the seer was accused in the murder of an IAS officer Mahesh Pratap Narain Misra, who was posted as DM Gopalganj in Bihar. In Haridwar, where the seer owned another ashram, he was accused of making murderous attack on the life of another seer Acharya Sri Ram.In 1987 the seer was awarded death sentence by a court but he got reprieve from the Supreme Court in that case. Many criminal cases were still pending against the seer, the SSP said.
