Sensex loses 237 pts, falls below 10,000

The benchmark Sensex failed to hold early gains and plunged below the 10,000 mark due to heavy selling.

The benchmark Sensex failed to hold early gains on Wednesday and plunged below the 10,000 mark due to heavy selling by funds.

The Sensex, which opened the day with a hefty gain of about 180 points, tumbled to trade lower by 237.54 points at 9,989.24.

The National Stock Exchange index Nifty also plunged by 70.25 points at 2923.50.

The major puller to the indices were Reliance Ind, Bajaj Auto, Tata Consultancy, BHEL, Grasim, Larsen and Toubro, ACC, Satyam Computers, Infosys, Wipro, Tata Motor and Maruti Udyog.
