Shahabuddin, in his early thirties, has almost an equal number of criminal cases against him related to kidnapping, murder, attempt to murder, possessing explosives, extortion, dacoity etc.

He was recently in news when former Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) DP Ojha reportedly submitted a report to the state government exposing Shahabuddin's links with Pakistan's ISI and his involvement in various criminal activities.

Consequently he was jailed on the charge of murder of the CPI-ML (L) activist Chote Lal Gupta in Siwan. The RJD government in Bihar later sacked the DGP, reportedly because of this controversy.

Shahabuddin is a classic example of criminalisation of politics. Tired of helping politicians to win elections, he entered the political arena in 1991 as an independent from the Jiradie assembly constituency of Bihar. Consequently, he contested on the Janata Dal ticket from Siwan and remained a member of the legislative assembly till 1996.

He became a Member of Parliament for the first time in 1996, when he was elected to 11th Lok Sabha. He was re-elected to 12th Lok Sabha (2nd term) in 1998 and to the 13th Lok Sabha (3rd term) 1999.

In the last parliamentary elections he had defeated Amar Nath Yadav of CPI (ML).
