Sister act sans borders
Zohra Segal and Uzra Butt performed Aik Thee Nani in Delhi recently.
At 92 and 87, Zohra Segal and Uzra Butt can give young actresses a run for their money. They are sisters alright, but that’s where the similarity ends. While Zohra charms with her dancing eyes and naughty smile, Uzra is a picture of poise.

The sisters, separated by the border (Uzra lives in Pakistan), were happy to come together again, to perform their celebrated play Aik Thee Nani. The reunion also brought back several fond memories.
Zohra recalled how they started their careers in Uday Shankar’s ballet group in the pre-Independence era. They were later a part of Prithviraj Kapoor’s Prithvi Theatre. After Independence, things changed. Recounts Uzra: “I was happy working in Mumbai till my husband had an heart attack. Then, my in-laws insisted we settle down in Pakistan. Initially, I felt miserable but soon I adjusted.”

Life in Pakistan in the ’60s, she adds, was different. “Drama, music and dance were not developed and there wasn’t anything for me to do. It took me almost 30 years to start working again with Aik Thee Nani, after which I did plays on TV.”
On working together, Zohra says: “It’s always wonderful working together. It reminds us of the days gone by.” Adds Uzra: “We share so many memories. I’ve always admired Zohra apa.”
Sibling rivalry? Zohra smiles: “The two of us are different. I was a tomboy while Uzra was the quieter one.” Uzra quips: “There’s no rivalry. I always looked up to her. Even when I was the leading lady and she was a dancer at Prithvi theatres I respected her for what she was.”
