IN ORDER to reduce the academic and emotional stress among the students, the senior professors at the Indian Institute of Technology have proposed certain changes in the curriculum, grading system and in other matters.

Teachers and the students accepted most of the proposals, but the implementation of these proposals depends upon the approval of the IIT-K senate.

The proposals will be placed at the first meeting of the senate. After the senate’s approval, all the proposals will be enforced in the institute.

Meanwhile, some of the proposals that did not need the approval of the senate were implemented in the current academic session.

According to a senior professor, in case a student failed at the examination he would not be given ‘F’ grade. His name would not be put on the notice board.

The result would be communicated to students through office-bearers of the Student Association.

However, the concerned teacher would also be intimated about the result. But these students would be given an opportunity to appeal and the decision of the appeal would be communicated to him soon. Besides, every failed student would be allowed to do summer training, the professor said.

According to senior professors all these facilities were not given to the students.

They were given ‘F’ grade and their names were displayed at the common board. Besides, they were not allowed do summer training if they did not clear the examination.

This reportedly frustrated the students and they did not hesitate to take extreme steps of committing suicide.

The academic stress led Swapnil Dharaskar to end his life last year. Soon after the incident, the students and the teachers at the institute decided to form a committee giving representation to the students to suggest certain measures to check suicide incidents in future. Consequently, the committee was constituted, which discussed several measures during the past six months and prepared a draft proposal for the approval of the senate, the administrative body of the IIT-K.
