Stress busts us in max-performance age zone

STRESS IS turning Indian men into non-performers! The human brain has an optimum level of neurons in the 18-40 age-group. These neurons support the brain in its analytical performance. But, due to inability to cope with different stress situations, most Indians fail to perform. They end up focusing on tackling stress in this ?age-zone of performance? and later, spend their life being stressed out for not having performed well in various life scenarios!

This was stated by Hari Shanker Sharma, Professor of Neurobiology at the Department of Surgical Sciences, University Hospital of Uppsala University (Sweden), while talking to HT Lucknow Live.

He was in the city recently to visit various institutes and deliver a lecture on stress-related problems and handling of neuro-trauma by clinicians.

Prof Sharma, who has worked as a research scientist at the Banaras Hindu University at Varanasi and several other prestigious institutes of India is working at Uppsala University with his team and is producing over two-dozen research papers every year on a variety of topics.

“With my personal experience, I can say that Indians have to work under very tough conditions where one has to wait for years to get even simple things done,” he said.

Explaining the cause for the failure of most Indian men, he said, the 18-40 age-group is the ‘best performance’ zone but Indians end up spending these years just getting things on track. When their turn to perform comes, the neuron level is low as they have almost crossed the age of 40, which badly affects their performance-level.

“Watching their performance going down, men are overcome with stress and this further, causes the neuron level to go down. If men can learn to tackle stress, they can optimise the neuron level and hence, increase performance. But this does not happen,” said Prof Sharma.

So, what is the solution? Says the professor: Right from childhood, parents and educationists should help develop analytical power in kids.

This would help them tackle stressful conditions when they grow up and thereby make them better performers!
