Sunanda Tharoor cremated at Lodhi Road Crematorium in Delhi

As scores of people gathered at the Lodhi Road crematorium on Saturday evening to bid a final farewell to Sunanda Tharoor, wife of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, sombreness engulfed the air.

As scores of people gathered at the Lodhi Road crematorium on Saturday evening to bid a final farewell to Sunanda Tharoor, wife of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, sombreness engulfed the air. family members and friends alike broke down when her body was consigned to the flames.

The body of Sunanda, who was found dead in a Delhi hotel on Friday evening, was brought to the crematorium from her house, where many social and political elite, including Shiela Dixit offered condolences.

A Bereaved Shashi Tharoor, who looked dazed and utterly sad, shouldered the body out of the ambulance to the pyre. She was grieved by her brother, father and other family members along with her 21-year-old son Shiv Menon, from her previous marriage. Shiv also lit the pyre.

From journalists to politicians and people from the social circuit, there were many at the cremation who sobbed during the last rites. Senior journalist Nalini Singh, said, “ have never met a person like her. She was lively, positive and sparkling. When I last spoke to her on 17th morning, she sounded distraught because of what she thought she thought had happened.”

Sabaah Shaikh’s, a party regular, voice quivered while talking about her friend Sunanda, “She was a vivacious, forthright, honest and affectionate person. Ther will be nobody like her. I received a text from her yesterday morning at 4:06 am that read, ‘I’m just so sick’. That really had me worried for her.”

Vikramaditya Singh also remembered her as a “vivacious and lovely person, who was full of life. And a solid friend”. Others seen paying their last goodbyes were artist Anjolie Ela Menon and her husband, fashion designer Ritu Beri with her husband and PR guru Dilip Cherian, among others.
