IN ORDER to address requirement of skilled manpower in small-scale industries (SSIs), a three-day skill-cum-technology up-gradation programme on development in plastics materials, processing and testing began at the Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology (IERT), Allahabad on Saturday. The programme has been organised by the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), Lucknow, in association with the Eastern UP Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Allahabad (EUPCCI), and sponsored by the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).

The programme has been organised by the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), Lucknow, in association with the Eastern UP Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Allahabad (EUPCCI), and sponsored by the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).
The programme was inaugurated in the presence of chief guest Dr GS Darbari, president EUPCCI, PK Singh, director IERT and Dr Vijai Kumar, centre head of CIPET, Lucknow.
Dr Darbari stressed on importance of technology in this highly competitive world, saying that this programme would provide knowledge of new plastic materials and proccesses, so that the plastic industry could take advantage and compete globally.
Programme coordinator from CIPET KJ Ghai informed that industrialists should adopt the latest developments in technology to meet competition and there was a vast scope for export of plastic products. There was a challenge to the plastics industry from China and it had to improve its quality and productivity through technology intervention and expand its market reach, he said.
Dr Vijay Kumar informed that plastics are used to manufacture variety of products from simple plastic toys to high tech high performance structural components in automobiles and spacecraft etc. India’s per capita consumption is 4.1 kgs. against world average 20 kgs.
The consumption of plastic materials is slated to double by 2010. Dr Vijay Kumar informed that CIPET Lucknow is a Governmet of India institution having state of art facilities in design, tooling, processing and testing of plastics and is providing trained manpower and technical services to plastics and user industries. He called upon all industries and entrepreneurs to avail specialized services of CIPET and prosper.
LN Bihani, veteran industrialist in plastic industry, spoke on the present status of plastic industry and its relevance to programme.
SC Rohtgi, director, IERT Graduate section informed regarding IERT and its various education programmes for the development of industry.
PK Singh, Director IERT, gave idea for close tie-up of CIPET, IERT and EUPCCI for generation of more employment. VK Tandon, Hony secretary EUPCCI gave vote of thanks to all participants.
