FOLLOWING AN interim order issued by Supreme Court, the City tempos will be phased out by this year-end. Regional Transport Officer G M Pathak informed that the tempos would be replaced by four-wheelers that are eight and 14-seaters.

His office has sent letters to automobile dealers and manufacturers to provide them a list of vehicles that fit the norms recommended by State Standing Council of which apex court has taken cognizance. The list, after examination, will be placed before the Supreme Court in June-end.

As per the norms, the four-wheeler vehicles should have four-speed gears and should possess Bharat Stage II accreditation. The fuel specified for the four wheelers is CNG or LPG. CNG, Pathak said, would become available in the City by January 2007.

According to the RTO, the new transport services will operate with City buses. He said Indore is a fast growing City and there would always be scope for mini buses.

The Tempo Union had filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court against recommendations of MP High Power Committee, which said that tempos were adding to City’s air pollution levels and they needed to be replaced by transport system run on environment-friendly fuel.

The Committee made recommendations after the Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered that its recommendations would be acceptable to Tempo Union. A writ was filed at Indore bench, which appealed for keeping tempos off City roads, as they caused pollution. After hearing the pleas, HC had ordered constitution of a high power committee.
