For the Greeks, a glass of great wine was made all the better, for beautiful pottery used to bottle it. Picasso followed suit and designed labels Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

In 2003, Jaideep Mehrotra designed a label for Sula while last year artist Sanjoy Ghosh created three labels for Vin’Opera. And now, several Indian artists come together to design unique labels for the 20th anniversary wine collection of Grover Vineyards.

Aesthetic touch
Each artist has responded to aesthetic appeal of a different kind of wine. The art label on Viognier has Paresh Maity’s paintings showing faces with different expressions, Sauvignon Blanc shows the colourful creations of Rini Dhumal, the Cabernet Shiraz has work by Sanjay Bhattacharya and Shiraz Rose has a representation of the female figure done by Rekha Rodwittya.

All tipsy
“When I was informed that the wine was Shiraz Rose, it conjured for me the heady mix of innocence and mystic. I wanted the label to be both arrestingly bold, yet starkly simple. Red signifies passion, and the curving flow of the young woman’s hair perhaps evokes the magic of mischief,” said Rekha Rodwittya.
