Recently Tata Motors launched the umpteenth model of the Sumo, the Victa, and this seemingly has everything that the older model lacked. The body shell still remains the same but a new square mesh grille, clear eyed headlights, a new bumper with airdams and fog lamps and body claddings have all gone along to give it a new and, if one might say, a more upmarket look. But then the Sumo had been no beauty and improving its looks is by no means an easy job.

The interiors too have changed and there is a distinct attempt not only to make it more user friendly but even stylish. The chrome garnish on the centre console is proof enough. The steering gets a leather wrapping and has become smaller. This has improved the feel and looks and the steering is a huge improvement. It has also been repositioned and this has improved the ergo but the biggest beneficiary is the turning circle which now has been reduced to 4.9 meters, comparable to any sedan. Some insulation has also been added which has also lowered the decibel level inside the cabin. Air-conditioning is dual with a separate roof mounted blower for the rear and the cooling is effective.
As in the older model the seating arrangement remains the same with three rows, the last row with foldable jump seats.

The Victa will be sold in three trims – the LX, EX and the GX and prices start at a very competitive Rs 4.87 lakh and go up to 5.87 lakh for the fully loaded 8-seater GX. The Victa would be available in a 1948 cc diesel engine, with two versions. A turbocharged unit which belts out 90 PS as peak power or one can have the option of the base unit which is naturally aspirated with 68 PS on the tap.
