There is movement in Ajit Jogi's limbs, say doctors
Ajit Jogi's condition has improved after neurosurgeons at the Bombay hospital conducted a three and half hour operation.
Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi's condition has improved after neurosurgeons at the Bombay hospital conducted a three and half hour operation on his spine last night.
Doctors who operated upon him say his hand and feet movement has improved and they are hopeful that he is on his way to recovery.
"The operation was successful, but we can only comment on his full recovery after three or four days,'' Dr Chandrashekar Deopujari, neurosurgeon, Bombay Hospital told Hindustan times.
Jogi suffered from a cervical spine injury when the Qualis car he was traveling in rammed into a tree, near Ghariaband, 145 km away from Raipur. Initial MRI showed serious spinal injuries and he was then shifted to Bombay hospital yesterday evening. A team of noted neurosurgeons in the city-- Dr Chandrashekar Deopujari, Dr Rajan Shah and Dr Samir Dalvie --conducted a critical three and hour operation yesterday night on Jogi's injured spinal area.
The operation was conducted for two major ailments : to remove pressure on the cervical spine, and also to remove fragments of disc and bones in the spine as a result of the impact due to the collusion.
Doctors say, in a neck and spine injury, the cervical spine compresses against the shoulders. The cervical spine has seven vertebrae and it connects the base of the head to the trunk and shoulders, and it also supports the head with the help of soft tissues.
During an injury of cervical spine, especially the kind of injury that Jogi suffered due to collision, the spine gets compressed against the shoulders and may result in fractures . In severe cases, this may lead to paralyses and even death.
" In Jogi's case, we feel he is out of danger now. Though initially he had felt numb in the feet and legs, after the operation there is substantial improvement and we are getting improved hand and feet responses . Jogi is very much in a conscious state now and had begun talking too. But he will be kept in the Intensive Care Unit for some more days and his condition will be monitored closely,'' Dr B K Goyal Bombay hospital , Dean said.
The neurosurgeons who conducted the operation say there is no further need for any operation, but the treatment for the swelling on the spine has already begun. Ajit Jogi's wife Renu and son Amit are with him at the hospital.
