Train rams into bus in Uttar Pradesh; 40 killed

At least 40 people died and several injured when a train rammed into a bus at an unmanned railway crossing in Kanshiram Nagar district, 350 km from Lucknow, on Thursday.

At least 40 people died and several injured when a train rammed into a bus at an unmanned railway crossing in Kanshiram Nagar district, 350 km from Lucknow, on Thursday.

The injured, of whom 10 are serious, have been admitted to district hospitals in Etah and Aligarh. PM Manmohan Singh has ordered an inquiry into the accident.

Railway officials said at around 1:47am the Bihar-bound Chhapra-Mathura Express train collided with the bus carrying a wedding party of around 100 people.

The Union government has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of each person killed, Rs 50,000 each for the seriously injured and Rs 10,000 each for those with minor injuries.
