THE ELECTION of Varanasi Nagar Nigam is likely to be conducted in the second week of June this year. The notification for the election is likely to be issued on May 15.As per information, the State Election Commission has forwarded the programme of the proposed election to the State Government and has also sought details regarding the progress in preparation for the election in different districts of the state.

The dates of filing nomination, voting and counting have also been finalized.
Sources said that the notification regarding corporation election would be issued on May 15 whereas filing of nomination papers, verification of nomination papers and allotment of election symbols would be conducted between May 22 to 30.
The voting for Nagar Palika, Nagar Nigam and Nagar Panchayat elections is likely to be conducted on June 10, 13 and 16 respectively. June 19 is the proposed date for counting of votes across the state. After forwarding the proposed programme of corporation election, the State Election Commission has sought details from the district administration about preparation of the proposed elections.
As per norms, the corporation election should be conducted within six months of the last meeting of the Nagar Nigam. Since the last meeting of Varanasi Nagar Nigam was held on January 17 this year, the authorities concerned are making efforts to ensure corporation election before June 16 in Varanasi.
Sources said that April 18 was the last date for filing objection over the voters list and the final voters list would be issued on May 12. At present, there are 8,78, 922 voters in Varanasi while earlier the number of total voters was 8,59,113. There is an increase of about 19, 937 voters in Varanasi.
Assistant City Commissioner PK Srivastava said that delimitation of wards had already been conducted and they have also forwarded the list of reservation to the authorities concerned. District AEO P Srivastava said that preparation for the corporation election was on in full swing.
