Weavers, artisans stage protest

A NUMBER of weavers and artisans under the banner of Forum on Rights of Weaver and Artisans staged a demonstration at the district headquarters on Wednesday.
They were demanding inclusion of Varanasi districts in National Rural Employment Scheme, issuance of red cards to the handloom weavers, exemption from electricity bills and implementation of Dr Darin’s Varanasi Weavers’ Trust plan.
The speakers were of the view that the government should ensure uplift of weavers and artisans by implementing several welfare schemes. They further added that weavers and artisans were reeling under poor economic crisis and were on the verge of starvation due to recession in the market.
A number of weavers and artisans committed suicide due to poverty during last two years in Varanasi, they said.
The speakers said they had already forwarded a memorandum to Prime Minister, Chief Minister and district magistrate in this regard but nothing had been done yet for the improvement of weavers and artisans in the district.
Prominent among those who participated in the dharna included, Faqruddin, Aftab Ansari, Sidique Hassan, Phoolchand Das, Iqubal, Ramzan Ali, Safi-ur-Rahman, Samsher Ali, Sant Lal, Shruti and Dr Lenin.
