ASP Manish Khatri said pieces of beef were found near Transport Nagar in Mahidpur last Tuesday, angering local residents who demanded immediate action against the accused.

The situation was brought under normalcy after police intervened and assured them that the miscreants would be arrested.

Based on CCTV footage, police traced a vehicle used to commit the act and arrested one Savir, hailing from Indore. His accomplices, son, Bhaiyyu, Sajid of Ujjain, Amjad Dilawar from Nagda, and Amjad from Raghvi were arrested later.

Khatri said the five had killed a cow in the area, and were planning to take the flesh, but local people forced them to flee, leaving the beef there.

They have been booked for cow slaughter, he said.
