Police said Sirajul, 40, had lured Nurjahan, 35, to the Shibpur Botanical Garden on Friday evening to offer money to fund their children's education.

An unsuspecting Nurjahan came to meet her husband when suddenly Sirajul whipped out a knife and stabbed her. As she fell down, Sirajul pinned her down and drove the knife through her throat. One of the jabs also went through her eyes.

As Nurjahan started screaming, guards at the garden rushed to the spot and overpowered her husband.

A profusely bleeding Nurjahan was first rushed to Howrah district hospital before being shifted to Howrah State General Hospital.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident was a fallout of a marital discord. "The couple had a long-standing dispute and Sirajul had come prepared. We have registered an attempt-to-murder case against him," Howrah superintendent of police Neeraj Kumar Singh said.

Sirajul appeared unrepentant. "I would have killed her if she had not screamed. She took away my children. She deserved to be killed," he said.
