Mamata announces Rs 5 lakh compensation for victims' kin

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and employment to one member of each family of the dead. The seriously injured would receive Rs 1 lakh and those with minor injuries Rs 25,000.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced compensation for the victims of Saithia train mishap.

She announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and employment to one member of each family of the dead.

The seriously injured would receive Rs 1 lakh and those with minor injuries Rs 25,000, she said.

Describing it as "a sad incident", she said: "Human lives are very important."

The minister said: "We are really sorry for this. Sorry to see two incidents take place in West Bengal in two months."

"Whatever happens is not (a) casual thing. We will take necessary action. We will take strong steps whoever is behind this."

The incident comes within two months of the Jnaneshwari train disaster near Jhargram that left 148 dead. The Railway Minister had alleged a 'political conspiracy' behind it.
