Vedic Village director Raj Kishore Modi held

Raj Kishore Modi, a director of the Vedic Village, a premier resort in the outskirts of the city, was arrested on Saturday night following a land acquisition-related controversy involving the firm after part of the resort was torched by locals.

Raj Kishore Modi, a director of the Vedic Village, a premier resort in the outskirts of the city, was arrested on Saturday night following a land acquisition-related controversy involving the firm after part of the resort was torched by locals.

Modi was called and interrogated by the police and the he was arrested, Superintendent of Police, North 24 Parganas district, Rahul Srivastava said.

He was charged with forcefully acquiring land and owning illegal arms, he said. Modi was earlier questioned by the police on August 24.

A large quantity of illegal arms and ammunition were found from the resort after the violence, including setting fire to the resort on August 23, which began with a football match-related clash and led to the killing of a person.

Altogether 30 persons, including Vedic Village project director Biplab Biswas, were arrested in the case. The main accused, Gaffar Mollah, is yet to be arrested.

Earlier on Saturday, Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had demanded an inquiry by the National Investigation Agency into the affairs of the resort.
