Vinesh Phogat's quote reminds us that life being unpredictable is no reason to stop fighting for the right thing.

Vinesh Phogat might currently serve as an MLA from Haryana, but that is not her claim to fame. She is an Indian freestyle wrestler who became the first Indian woman wrestler to have won gold at both the Asian and Commonwealth Games.

She represented India at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympics and has twice won bronze at the World Championships. It is the fighting spirit that she embodies that sets Vinesh apart from all. The Indian sports icon celebrates her birthday every year on August 25.

To commemorate the day, today’s quote is an excerpt from her social media post dated August 16, 2024, that reads: “I can’t predict what the future holds for me and what awaits me in this journey next, but I am sure that I will continue to fight always for what I believe in and for the right thing.”

What is the meaning of Vinesh Phogat’s quote?

The aforementioned social media post was made by Vinesh Phogat after she was disqualified from the women’s 50kg final at the 2024 Paris Olympics for being 100 grams overweight. The Court of Arbitration for Sport also dismissed her appeal for a joint silver medal, which officially ended her Olympic campaign without a podium finish.

The heart-wrenching development broke the wrestler, but in the end, it did not manage to break her spirit. The quote proves just that. It acknowledges the uncertainty of the future, an obstacle that is beyond human control.

At the same time, it champions the indomitable human spirit which refuses to give up against all odds. Vinesh makes it clear that she is a fighter at heart and is not one to leave the field when the going gets tough. Not only is she willing to fight the fight, but she is also guided by her beliefs and her determination to do the “right thing.”

What is the relevance of Vinesh Phogat’s quote?

The words of Vinesh Phogat ring true for all. In life, every person has to come across situations that are beyond their control. Acceptance of the unpredictability of life is something that gives one strength to face the unknown and deal with anything that comes one's way.

But more importantly, it is the fighting spirit, and the conviction to do the right thing that ensures that one remains steadfast in their path and principled in their actions. It ensures integrity, with which people can always do more on any given day.
