This festive season, watch out for common problems that can arise due to at-home skin treatment
Gearing up your skin for the festive glow? Here are some of the common problems that can arise due to at-home skin treatment
Nowadays, a considerable number of people are inclined towards attempting DIY skin treatments or utilising skincare products without seeking expert advice, primarily influenced by social media influencers' videos. Nonetheless, indulging in such practices can result in a plethora of skin problems but sweat not as we provide insights into the complexities that arise from self-administered skincare routines but remember not to unquestioningly believe everything you encounter on social media platforms.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Dermato-Surgeon at The Esthetic Clinics, shared, “Taking skin treatment at home may seem like a convenient and cost-effective idea but it can actually do more harm than good. While DIY treatments may promise quick fixes and beautiful results, they often lack the expertise and professional guidance needed to address specific skin concerns effectively. Attempting skincare procedures at home without proper knowledge or sterilisation measures can result in infections, scarring or other long-term damage. By investing in professional skincare treatments by certified specialists, you not only take care of your skin's immediate needs but also set a solid foundation for maintaining healthy and radiant skin throughout your life.”
According to her, here are some of the common problems that can arise due to at-home skin treatment:
- One of the biggest complications that can arise from attempting skincare treatments at home is the risk of causing skin damage or irritation. Without proper knowledge and training, it's easy to misuse or overuse products, leading to adverse effects on the skin. For example, using strong chemical exfoliators without understanding how they work or how often to use them can result in redness, dryness, and even burns. Moreover, attempting extractions without professional guidance can lead to scarring and infection if done incorrectly.
- Another complication is the potential for allergic reactions or sensitivities to certain ingredients. Many skincare products contain a mix of active ingredients and preservatives that may not be suitable for everyone's skin type or condition. While some individuals may have no issues with a particular ingredient, others may develop rashes, itching or swelling upon application.
- Another problem that arises from using skincare products without professional guidance is the potential for long-term damage. Certain ingredients, such as retinol or acids found in exfoliants, have the power to transform your complexion when used correctly. However, when used incorrectly or excessively, they can wreak havoc on your skin's barrier function, leading to dryness, blisters, sensitivity, and even premature ageing.
The skincare expert conlcuded, “It's crucial to recognise that while there are plenty of resources available online for DIY skincare treatments, every individual has unique skin concerns and needs. What may work for one person might not work for another. Seek professional advice to ensure effective and safe skincare practices tailored specifically to an individual’s needs and avoid many complications associated with home-based skincare attempts while achieving healthier-looking skin in a safer manner.”
