Top life skills to teach your toddler: Psychologist shares insights
From picking toys to helping their parents in the kitchen to how to clean their messes, here are top five life skills that we can teach our toddlers.
Watching your kid grow up and learn how to navigate through life is one of the most beautiful and cherished part of parenthood. Watching them pick themselves up, fall, learn, commit mistakes and learn to fix it, and most importantly, watching them grow up to be amazing beings – these are the reasons why parenthood is cherished. However, with time, we also need to slowly incorporate life skills in our toddlers so that they can start young and learn quickly. Dr Jazmine McCoy, Psychologist, who is known for sharing insights and tips on parenthood on her Instagram profile, addressed the life skills that we should teach our toddlers and slowly instill the activities in them.

“Now of course, these are generalisations and every child will grow and develop these skills in their own time. This is simply a rough guide to follow based on what most toddlers can do/start to learn,” she added. Here are the top skills that Jazmine suggested:
How to clean their spills: Toddlers, as soon as they learn to walk and play, spill things and make mess. It is important to teach them how to clean their own mess so that they can learn to solve them.
How to put toys back: When toddlers play, they spread their toys all over the house. Often parents pick up the toys after playtime and arrange everything back in place. But as soon as they learn to walk, toddlers need to be taught the art of picking up their toys and putting them back in place till their next playtime.
How to help in kitchen: Toddlers love the kitchen – mostly, because they are kept away from it. Instead, include the toddler in the kitchen activities. They can help us stir food items, or sprinkle garnish on food and other small activities.
How to brush teeth: This is a life skill that they would need to learn with time. With little help from us, they can start soon to keep their teeth clean, by themselves.
How to pick their clothes: In case they are already walking and learning to pick their toys, they should also be taught how to pick up their clothes and put them in place.
