The police were able to track the accused on the basis of a photograph that the brother had taken on Sunday evening, when the original incident took place.
Suraj Yadav, Kailash Yadav, Anil Gupta and Akash Gupta, all in their early twenties, have been charged with sections 354 (punishment for molestation) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. All four live near the skywalk, where the incident took place. They were arrested on Tuesday.
According to the complainant, who is visiting Mumbai to attend a wedding and is living with her brother in the central suburbs. On Sunday night, around 10pm, the 24-year-old woman had dinner in Powai with her brother and a female friend.
Afterwards, around 10pm, the three were on a skywalk near Hiranandani bus stop in Powai. “After dinner, we took the foot over bridge and were crossing it to go to the other side where there are ice cream stalls. As we were crossing it, I was on a [phone] call and my brother and friend were walking ahead of me,” said the complainant.
As she came down the skywalk, a group of four men molested her. “I was shocked and scared; I could not say anything for a few seconds,” she said.
Her brother quickly realised she was not behind him and their friend. He turned back for her and confronted the men who were harassing his sister. The four accused allegedly manhandled him, but he was able to get out of their clutches and take a picture of one of the accused on his phone.
The four accused ran away when they realised he was calling the police.
The woman, accompanied by her brother and friend, filed a complaint at the police station and shared the photograph. A first information report (FIR) was lodged and a team of officers from Powai police station began tracking the accused using inputs from local informers.
