A sessions court in Mumbai on Thursday sentenced Ankur Panwar to death in the Preeti Rathi acid attack case. Here are five cases in Mumbai in which the death penalty has been given:

1. Ajmal Kasasb

LeT operative Ajmal Amir Kasab was hanged and buried at Yerwada Central Prison in Pune on November 21, 2012. A special court had convicted and sentenced him for his role in the November 26, 2008 terror attacks, after which the Bombay high court confirmed the death sentence, and the supreme court upheld it on August 29, 2012

2. Ramchandra Karanjule

A sessions court sentenced Ramchandra Karanjule, the founder of Kalyani Mahil and Bal Seva Sanstha to death on March 22, 2013, after he was convicted of raping and killing a minor and abusing the disabled inmates of an orphanage.

3. Chandrabhan Sanap

A sessions court handed down the capital punishment to Chandrabhan Sanap for raping and killing software engineer Esther Anuhya, who went missing after arriving at the Kurla Terminus on January 5, 2014.

4. Yakub Abdul Razzak Memon

One of the key conspirators of the March 1992 bombings in Mumbai, Yakub was hanged at Nagpur on July 30, 2015. A special TADA court had on September 12, 2006, convicted four members of the Memon family, including Yakub. In March 2013, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence.

5. The five convicts of the 7/11 serial blasts

On October 1, 2015, a trial court in Mumbai sentenced five of the 12 convicts to death for their involvement in the July 11, 2006 serial blasts on Mumbai’s suburban network that left 189 dead and hundreds injured. Kamal Ansari from Bihar, Mohammed Faisal Ataur Rehman Shaikh from Mumbai, Ehtesham Qutubuddin Siddhiqui from Thane, Naveed Hussain Khan from Secunderabad and Asif Khan from Jalgaon were awarded the death sentence.
