Autorickshaw driver arrested for lewd gesture at passenger

The Santa Cruz police arrested a 34-year-old rickshaw driver who allegedly made sexually explicit gesture at a woman passenger late on Monday night in Santa Cruz (West).

The Santa Cruz police arrested a 34-year-old rickshaw driver who allegedly made sexually explicit gesture at a woman passenger late on Monday night in Santa Cruz (West).

This is a second such incident after a woman registered a FIR against another rickshaw driver in MIDC police station last month.

According to the Santa Cruz police, the accused is identified as Kedarnath Verma. The 30-year-old complainant boarded the rickshaw from Santa Cruz to go to her residence in Versova after work.

According to the complaint, she took the rickshaw at around 10.30 pm. When the vehicle reached on Juhu Tara road, the driver gestured at her which insulted her modesty.

The complainant had an altercation after which the rickshaw driver abused her. She asked him to take the rickshaw to DN nagar police station which transferred the case to the Santa Cruz police station .

An FIR has been registered under sections 354A and 509 ((sexual harassment and use of word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC . The accused was produced before a magistrate’s court. He was sent to judicial custody.
