The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition criticised the Shiv Sena and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration for targeting RJ Malishka by sending a notice for mosquito-breeding to her house on Tuesday.
Malishka became a target for ruling party Sena after the channel that she works at, released a video mocking the BMC for its ill-preparedness during monsoon.
Corporators from the BJP said that instead of sending a notice, the BMC should have given a reply by improving the quality of roads. “This sort of behaviour is childish and stupid. There should be an inquiry against the official who issued this notice,” said Manoj Kotak, group leader of BJP in BMC. Another BJP corporator, Makarand Narvekar, said that the Sena’s style of hooliganism was spreading to its officials also.
BJP leader Ashish Shelar and NCP leader Nitesh Rane also extended their support to Malishka on Twitter.
Congress corporator Ravi Raja alleged that the assistant commissioner of H/West ward (Bandra) was asked to find the house and send a notice. “We want to thank Malishka for making a video, which highlights Mumbai’s pathetic condition during the monsoon. This is a democracy where criticism should be taken positively.”
Samajwadi Party (SP) corporator Rais Shaikh, during a civic standing committee meeting on Wednesday, stated that BMC officials were becoming “intolerant” of criticism.
Ruling party Shiv Sena, however, defended all the criticism coming its way. Yashwant Jadhav, Sena corporator said that the notice was issued to Malishka’s mother and not her. “I wish corporators understand the issue before blaming anyone. If she (Malishka) had a complaint about roads, then why did she not send a letter to the municipal commissioner? Why is she blaming BMC for traffic and delay of trains when it is not under our jurisdiction?” he said. Jadhav also alleged illegal alterations at Malishka’s Bandra house.
Mangesh Satamkar, a Sena corporator said, “A person who cannot take care of her own house should not criticise BMC.”
