A 27-year-old inmate at Thane jail, who was arrested a few months back in connection with a rape case by the Samta Nagar police, committed suicide on the jail premises on Monday.
A 27-year-old inmate at Thane jail, who was arrested a few months back in connection with a rape case by the Samta Nagar police, committed suicide on the jail premises on Monday.The deceased, identified as Sirajali Shaikh,27, used to do odd jobs and was a resident of Mumbai.
Shaikh was missing since the afternoon, according to Thane jail authorities. A search was launched after this. In the evening, they found Shaikh’s body near the bathroom. “We have sent the body to Thane civil hospital for post-mortem and a panchnama is going on”, a jail official said.
The officer from Thane jail added,” It was in the morning when a few of our officers noticed that Shaikh was missing. We went to look for him and found his body near the bathroom. We alerted the local police station afterwards to investigate the matter”.
B.K Upadhay, additional director-general of police, confirmed that an inmate had committed suicide in Thane jail.
An ADR ( accidental death report) has been registered at Thane Nagar police station.
