After frequent complaints about the free WiFi at suburban train stations, the railway ministry’s agency RailTel and Google will conduct a survey.
While commuters have complained about the service, there were also reports that the WiFi was being used by non-commuters and miscreant to watch porn.
The survey is expected to begin from August 1.
On the Central Railway, the survey will be done at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Byculla, Kurla, Thane, Dadar, Vashi and Belapur.
On the Western Railway, the survey will be done at Mumbai Central, Bandra, Andheri and Churchgate stations.
Officials from RailTel and Google will visit these stations and ask commuters for feedback, and the issues they are facing while using the free Wifi at the stations.
“The survey is being done to get passengers’ reactions to the Wifi service available at the stations. Once the survey is over, the recommendations from commuters will be taken into consideration and the necessary changes will be made,” said a RailTel official, requesting anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
“Frequent complaints regarding misuse of the free WiFi services have been received, particularly at the Mumbai Central station.” said Aarti Singh Parihar, Senior Division Commercial Manager, Western Railway.
The Hindustan Times recently reported that the free WiFi had become a headache for railway authorities after they had received constant complaints.
Non-commuters and miscreants were using the facility to watch porn during the night, officials had said.
Officials in the Central Railway have stated that there have been situations where the station masters had to approach the railway police and ask them to ensure the miscreants leave.
Meanwhile, the railway ministry has planned to provide free WiFi services on all suburban stations in the city.
Currently, the stations equipped with WiFi facility include Chembur, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Thane, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Bandra Terminus, Vashi, Kalyan, Panvel, Borivli, Churchgate, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Byculla, Khar Road, Dadar (Central Railway), Dadar (Western Railway), Andheri, Bandra and Mumbai Central.
