Kalyan civic body seeks nod to start maintenance work during LS elections code of conduct

As per Election Commission of India (ECI), once the model code of conduct is imposed, announcement and launch of new schemes and projects are prohibited.

The standing committee of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) will approach the Thane collector seeking permission to carry out the tender process for pothole repairs and cleaning of nullahs in the city while the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections is in force.

As per Election Commission of India (ECI), once the model code of conduct is imposed, announcement and launch of new schemes and projects are prohibited.

“We don’t want to announce or launch any new schemes or projects. We will just take up necessary civic works which are important ahead of the monsoon. These include works related to pothole filling and drain cleaning,” said Dipesh Mhatre, chairperson, standing committee, KDMC.

The civic body’s plans are expected to cost ₹35 crore.

“The tender opening for these works was done on February 25. However, the civic administration failed to carry it forward to the standing committee before the code of conduct was imposed,” said Mhatre. KDMC commissioner Govind Bodke was unavailable to comment on the issue.

“We have been asking the civic commissioner to send the tenders for approval, however, it has been delayed,” he added.
