Karan Oberoi bail hearing: Lawyer cites excerpts from chat
Arguing for bail for actor-singer Karan Oberoi, arrested on charges of rape on May 5, the defence described the complainant woman as “a practitioner of dark arts, who is marriage-obsessed and was in a one-sided love affair”. The court will continue hearing the arguments on Thursday.
Oberoi met the 34-year-old woman fashion designer-healer on a dating application in August 2016. The woman claimed they were in a relationship and she gifted him appliances and jewellery and also paid for his mortgaged apartment. In her complaint to the Oshiwara police, she alleged the ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi’ fame actor raped her on the pretext of marriage.
While arguing before Dindoshi sessions judge SU Baghele, Oberoi’s counsel Dinesh Tiwari read out excerpts of chats purportedly between the woman and the actor and her clients. “In an online chat group for her clients, she talks about solving issues with current lover, former lover and a third lover, etc. Another message reads that this class is not about demon worshipping, but it is about them worshipping you. I have found a scapegoat for blood sacrifice which they demand. In another message she promises to work on each individual and bloodlines, including angelic, demonic, fairies, werewolves and vampires, etc,” said Tiwari.
“In her mind, she thinks she is related to Oberoi from previous birth and they are destined to marry in this birth. In one message, she says she feels Oberoi is like her child…She claimed she has been seeing their future in her dreams since childhood. In another, she gives Oberoi 24 hours to take a step towards her for love, as she has made a deal with the universe,” he said.
The woman has alleged they broke up on October 25, 2018 and Oberoi demanded money from her, threatening to make public a video recording of their sexual act. Tiwari refuted the claims, saying: “October 25 is a very special date for her. She is obsessed with calculations and numerology. She even carries a skeleton with her... If someone has done something wrong to me, how do I fall in love with that person? Is it possible for a woman, who has been raped, to see the rapist at his residence? How would she feel secure?”
Oberoi’s counsel also claimed that the actor reportedly repeatedly sent messages asking the woman to stay away, but she kept coming back.
