Man who created fake account of director Ayan Mukerji to cheat writer arrested
Unit 11 of the Mumbai crime branch arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly blackmailing and trying to cheat a freelance writer after creating a fake Facebook account in the name of Hindi film director Ayan Mukerji. The arrested accused, Mohammad Shoeb Mohammad Iqbal Jethwa, was arrested from Mumbai Central railway station on Thursday, said police officer.
According to the police, the complainant, a 27-year old freelance writer, approached Malad police station on Wednesday. The accused sent a friend request on the complainant’s Facebook account after creating a fake account in the name of Ayan Mukerji few months ago. The complainant accepted his friend request and the two started chatting and the accused promised to give her a job in the film industry.
The accused called the woman and asked her to meet his friend as he required a writer for his work. The accused himself met the woman pretending that he was a friend of Ayan Mukerji. After a few days, he started calling the woman and asked her to pay money if she want to work in the industry, said a crime branch officer.
“When the woman refused to pay, the accused threatened to morph her photos and will upload on Facebook. The woman got scared and started inquiring about the person” said police inspector Chimaji Adhav of the unit 11. “Meanwhile, she learnt that a woman had registered a complaint against a person, who was demanding sexual favours from her with the same modus operandi, at Oshiwara police station. The person was also using the same name Ayan Mukerji” said Adhav.
She filed complaint in Malad police station and official of the unit 11 also started conducting parallel inquiring and nabbed the accused. The woman approached the real Ayan Mukerji and verified the facts, said a police officer.
The accused was handed over the Malad police station for further inquiry.
