Mumbai: 13-year-old killed after being run over by speeding train

The Bandra GRP suspect Faizan was trying to get out of the railway premises and used the tracks.

A 13-year-old boy was run over by a speeding Borivali-bound local train when he was crossing the tracks at Santacruz railway station on Monday afternoon, the police said. A case of accidental death report has been registered.

As reported earlier by Hindustan Times, out of the 3,202 people who died on railway premises in 2016, as many as 1,798 people (more than 50%) died while crossing the tracks. It also means on an average five people were killed daily last year in such accidents.

According to the Bandra Government Railway Police (GRP), Monday’s incident took place around 2.30pm between platform no. 2 and platform no.3. The victim, identified as Faizan Farooq Sayyed, was a resident of Dhamu Nagar in Kandivali east.

Faizan was in a Churchgate-bound slow local train. He got down from the train and stepped down from platform no.2. He was moving towards platform no. 3 when the speeding train, which does not halt at Santacruz, mowed him.

The Bandra GRP suspect Faizan was trying to get out of the railway premises and used the tracks, which is done by other people as well.

It is not clear where he was headed and he was not wearing his school uniform. His parents arrived at the Bandra GRP to claim his body. His father is a labourer. The police are checking the CCTV cameras to ascertain exact sequence of events.
