The Gamdevi police in south Mumbai are on the lookout for a woman, aged around 40-50 years, who allegedly is collecting donations in the name of Indian playback singer and Bharat Ratna awardee, Lata Mangeshkar.
According to the police, one of Lata Mangeshkar’s managers, on her behalf, registered an FIR against the woman under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for cheating and forgery.
According to deputy commissioner of Police (DCP), zone II, Dyaneshwar Chavan, “As per the FIR registered on Wednesday, a woman has been named as an accused. She has, since the past one month, been contacting people from affluent families with forged letter heads of Mangeshkar’s charities and seeking donations from them.
The complainant said that the woman has made several lakh rupees by fraudulently using Mangeshkar’s name, and also told the victims that the singer carries out her charitable work secretly, and so not many know about it.”
Chavan said that no victims have come forward as of now, but based on the allegations made by Mangeshkar, and the visiting cards and forged letter submitted to police by the complainant, a FIR has been registered.
The Gamdevi police will soon get in touch with as many victims as possible and to find out how much money they ended up donating to the woman.
