Pay fine if number plate of your vehicle in Maha does not have four digits

If the number plate of your vehicle does not have four digits, get it repainted, or else you may have to pay a fine.

This is the new directive issued by the state transport commissioner to RTOs in the state last week.

This means, if the registration number of your vehicle is between 1 and 999, add zero before it on the number plate. So if your registration number is 9, you will have to write it as 0009 on the number plate.

According to RTO, giving numbers such as 1,9, 99, 786 and others -- for which the state charges higher prices -- is against the rules. Hence, they plan to enforce the decision at the time of registration of vehicles.

A senior official said the directive was issued based on the suggestion by the estimate committee of the Maharashtra legislature. “We will try to spread awareness before starting to fine people for flouting rules,” said the official.

RTO officials said those flouting rules will have to pay Rs100 fine according to the law.
