Railway minister Piyush Goyal’s Dussehra gift to Mumbaiites: 60 new local train services
Of the new services, 28 will be on Central Railway and 32 on the Western Railwaymumbai Updated: Sep 26, 2017 23:17 IST
Railway minister Piyush Goyal is likely to gift 60 new local train services to the city’s commuters. The new local train services will begin from the first week of October. On Western Railway (WR) 32 new local train services will be introduced, on the Central Railway (CR) there will be 28 — 14 services on the Harbour Railway and 14 new services on the Trans- Harbour route.
There will be no new services on the Central Railway mainline. This comes after Goyal’s insistence on starting local train services between CSMT and Kalyan on the mainline. Railway authorities had prepared a plan to start 12 services before of Thane and Kalyan stations by October, but are now rethinking it.
Authorities now say new local trains will be introduced in November.
Both WR and CR had been working for a year on introducing more local train services in their new time table. Most of the new services are expected to be added during peak hours. This will be done after directives of the railway minister to increase capacity and reduce overcrowding.
Railway sources say Goyal is concerned about the deaths reported on the city’s railway network and has asked officials to find different ways to reduce the overcrowding in compartments.
“The 32 new services will begin from the first week of October on WR.” said Ravinder Bhakar, chief public relations officer, Western Railway.
The railway minister is expected to officially change the name of Elphinstone Road station to Prabhadevi station, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, inaugurate a series of escalators, elevators on both the railways and lay the foundation stone for a statue of Maratha warrior king Shivaji on Friday.
