The bus driver was ferrying students to a nearby school. The victim, Pramod Mandal, was riding a bicycle on the same road near Raheja Crest Apartments when the bus knocked him down.

Mandal, who worked as a cook, was on his way to work. Investigating officials remained tight-lipped about the school and the identity of the driver.

“There were four to five children in the bus. We have arrested the driver following the death of the cyclist,” said Bharat Gaikwad, senior inspector at Amboli police station.

He said the school children were not injured in the accident.

The Amboli police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against the driver. Eye-witnesses alerted the Mumbai police control room after which the driver was taken into custody. The childrens’ parents were also informed, said the police.

Officials are checking if the driver’s license is valid.
