Shyamwar Rai, the accused-turned-approver in the Sheena Bora murder case, could not identify his own wife in video clips shown to him in court. Rai said he would be able to identify her only in a photograph.

Rai was being cross-examined by Shrikant Shivde, who represents Peter Mukerjea, one of the accused in the murder. Shivde referred to Rai’s wife’s Sharda’s interview given to news channels as she had claimed Rai was picked up by police much before he was shown as arrested.

Rai was arrested from Carter Road on August 21, 2015, a Friday, when he was allegedly on his way to discard a pistol given to him by Indrani Mukerjea, the main accused in the case. However, Rai’s wife in interviews said her husband was picked up earlier, on Wednesday.Rai used to be Indrani’s driver.

The defence of all three accused – Indrani, Sanjeev Khanna and Peter – have claimed that Rai was picked up by police much before his official arrest. The defence lawyers have also claimed that Rai named the accused under the pressure of police.

Shivde presented an application to show to Rai in the court the video clips of the interviews . The prosecution however, objected the plea. The court allowed the plea and the videos were shown to Rai.

Referring to the videos, in which Sharda is seen surrounded by many women, Shivde asked Rai: “Is any lady among these your wife?” Rai said: “I can see a lady who looks like my wife, but I cannot be sure if she is my wife.”

Shivde asked Rai several times if the voice and face of the woman shown in the videos matched with those of his wife. Rai, however, was indecisive and said he could not say if the woman in the video was his wife.

Reacting to Rai’s reply, Shivde alleged Rai was not identifying his wife deliberately, as what she had said in the interviews was against him. Rai denied the suggestion and said he can identify his wife but not through videos.

Shivde also alleged that Rai refused to identify his wife in the video because that would falsify his story on his arrest from Carter Road with the pistol. Rai denied the allegation.
