Thieves steal gold, silver worth ₹50 lakh from Mumbai jewellery store

The stolen items include one-and-a-half kg of gold jewellery, about five kg of silver jewellery and 50,000

A few unidentified people broke into a jewellery store at Nerul on Sunday night and stole gold and silver jewellery worth Rs50 lakh. The theft was discovered on Monday at 10.30am by shop owner Gopal Singh Sadana. The Nerul police said the thieves also stole Rs50,000.

“There were CCTV cameras installed inside the store. But the thieves broke them and took away the DVD in which the recordings were stored,” said sub-inspector P Sonkamble from Nerul police station.

The stolen items include one-and-a-half kg of gold jewellery and about five kg of silver jewellery. Though the police are questioning a few suspects, no one has been arrested so far.

“We suspect that someone from the area, where the shop is located, is involved in the crime. We are following certain leads and will to solve the case at the earliest soon,” said another police officer.

A case has been registered under sections 454 (house-breaking in order to commit offence), 457 (house-breaking by night), 380 (theft in dwelling house) and 34 (common of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the unidentified accused.
